We have been asked to find out a bit of history for this Boxing club. Has anyone out there got any information about this place. When it started, who by? We know it was originally the church hall, and the school infant classes used to have there dinners there? Does anyone have any photographs of the interior at any time. The hall was also used as a soup kitchen during the 20' and 30's we have a photo in our archive of the volunteers.

Shakespeare's Band in Attendance M.C. is H Towl, Esq. Dancing 7pm to 1am Admission One shilling & sixpence Secretary (of the Social Committee) was H. Tattershall
Perhaps this will invoke some memories from someone!

Firstly a bit of background about the ticket. Nothing on Shakespeare's Band, but there was a Shakespeare family living in Hill View in 1911.(with musical leanings)
H(ewlett Towl Was born in Pembs in 1877. He was a popular 'local' M.C. for these type of events?
H(enry) Tattershall.Sec. Born 1883 lived at 63, King Edward St.in 1911.
Nothing on Mrs I.Davis yet!
I will get back to you about the picture, please bear with.

Once again thank you. I nipped in to see Brian in the Blaen to get some more history on the Boxing Club and the boxers who trained there. Very informative! He also directed me to the WEXA and I had a chat with Gareth Andrews there. Gareth kindly lent me a photo of the founding members of the WEXA as I recognised the name H. Towle so asked if I could borrow the photo for the Official Opening of the refurbished club (to put along the tickets we found it the former Boxing Club). (Spelt Towle on the photo). I overheard someone looking at the photo say 'That's my uncle' (referring to E. Woods). She was so thrilled to see the photo and said how much she wished she'd had it years ago before her parents passed away. Will be asking Gareth for a copy for her. A wonderful outcome so grateful Gareth was so lind to lend it to me.
What you find when you begin to scratch the surface! Loving the process.

Good one! Frances. Please can you get us a photocopy of the photograph as well for our archive? I think that Towl(e) must me a misprint? But I will recheck because you never know where it might lead.
