Has anyone out there got information about a Butchers shop owned by a Thomas family. I do not have any more details, other than Blaengarw, Pontycymmer, Pontrhyl. The time frame would be the 1930s or 1940s. If I get any further clues I will post them. Regards

Think I may have found something, the 1911 census has a Thomas family at 135/137 Oxford Street, occupation of head of family is Butcher. I have tried to trace the family back a bit through census and think the head of the family, William Thomas, was born at Tynton Farm, Llangeinor c. 1864. So it looks to me like this is the Butcher shop that I knew as Tyntons during the 1960' & 70's, (the address looks about right) which presumably passed down through the family somehow.
Can anyone confirm/check my findings?

Hello Magsvs. I have a bit more information now, which may or may not help! The person asking the questions is a Robert Thomas. He says he has located a 3-storey house in Lluest which was a business for Azariah Thomas. This was not a shop as such, but Azariah used to travel to Bridgend cattle market on a Tuesday, pick up livestock drive it home, and slaughter it there? And then sell it on to local families. Then his daughter caught Diptheria and all his stock was confiscated and destroyed. He left Lluest and went to work at the pumping station in Ogmore near the Castle. In later years his son became a Butcher and Azariah would help him out by making the sausages and faggots. regards gerald

Two brothers who were my maternal grandfather's cousins, William and Griffith "Griff" Thomas kept butchers shops in Oxford Street and Pantygog respectfully during the period 1900-1911. They were related to the Thomas family of Tynton, as was my grandfather. Another cousin Thomas Thomas kept the Ffalda Hotel and was a butcher previously. My late mother could remember when a child "uncle Griff" calling at her home near Llangeinor Railway Station and having short rides in his cart. I am hoping to put together a "family tree" on which I hope to outline the inter-connection between many of the Garw farmers with their descendents occupations.

Further to my earlier message of March 31st. William and Griffith Thomas were two sons of John Thomas who farmed at Tynton. As my late mother was born in 1918 and remembered Uncle Griff, I assume the butchers shops continued in the family for a number of years.
John Thomas, Tynton, was the brother of Jenkin Thomas, Fforchwen farm. It was Jenkin's son Thomas who was the farmer of Falda, butcher of Oxford Street and late Falda Hotel. John Tynton and Jenkin Fforchwen were the sons of Thomas Thomas of Llwynffynnon farm. This last named Thomas was the eldest son of Thomas & Elizabeth Thomas of Gelli'ron farm. I am descended from Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter Margaret, the late Mrs Jenkin Thomas, Felin Arw Corn Mill. I have now put together a series of potted notes on the descendents of Gelli'ron which I hope to forward to the GVHS shortly.
I have today 17/04/2014, corrected an earlier mistake in this message about Thomas Thomas Falda.
