Recently I was pootling about on Ebay and I came across a beautiful brass, heart shaped snuff/Bacco box inscribed: James J Maggs. Pantygog, 1912. Priced at 5 pounds initially. I thought at first I would bid for it as it was a bit of local history worth keeping in the valley?. When the price shot up to 92 pounds I thought better. Assuming that he was employed in a local colliery. I wondered how long Mr Maggs would have had to work in 1912 to clear 92 pounds? And does he still have relations in the area?. Can anyone tell me more about this person or his family? I intend to try and find out what I can about him. Can you help?.

Further information about a previous posting has come to light. New member Philip Lloyd has come up with some details about James J Maggs ( Coal Hewer) and his family.
James J Maggs was 39 years old in 1912 and living at 17 Gloucester buildings, Pantygog, with his wife Blanche and their 4 children James George Alfred 12. Kimberley Clifford 10. Phillis Elizabeth 2. and Gladys 1. James and Elizabeth were both from Winterborne Down ,Bristol. They married in 1898 at Barton Regis,Gloucs. We don't know when the family came to the Garw, but all the children were born elsewhere ie Winterbourne Down and Merthyr vale. Nor do we know which colliery James snr worked at. Can you help with any more information about this family?. Hopefully Philip Lloyd and I will do some more detective work and report back to this forum in due course. Please feel free to comment on the story so far.
