The subjects on pre-industrial occupations and on early housing have both been opened. What then of the people that built and lived in the Garw?
Let me start with my own family. My paternal grandfather was born Blaengarw in 1888. His parents were natives of Letterston, near Fishguard, where they married in 1886.
My paternal grandmother was born in Lonlas 1890 and came to Blaengarw about 1908 to live with her paternal grandparents who had arrived from Llansamlet in 1886. These events have been confirmed from Census Returns & Civil Registration Documents.
My maternal grandmother was born in 1883 and left her native Pontardawe in 1900 to come to Tynyrheol as house keeper for her recently widowed maternal uncle, the Rev TB Phillips, Tylagwyn.
My maternal grandfather was born in Moelgilau Fach Cottage (not to be confused with the farm of that name) in 1881 and lived all his life in the Garw. It is only through both sides of his father's family that I have any historical links to the valley. His mother's family coming from Bridgend and the Vale.
One couple came from Glyncorrwg, where they married in 1800; late 1801 or early 1802 to farm Gelli'ron and family were still in occupation until 10 or so years ago. The other couple were married in Llangeinor Church in 1801 but before then nothing is known of them.
There may be many Garw people who are also a mixture of the "old" and the "new" families and I would like to learn more about where the population came from & when.
Colin
